Guest Speaker - Coach Vic Mitchell

Guest Speaker: Vic Mitchell

Position or Title: Sr. Athletic Director

Organization: Shorter University

Speaker’s Main Points:

Background Information: Vic Mitchell began college at The University of Georgia and was a science major; as his college career continued he soon realized his love for coaching. After volunteering to coach summer basketball Mitchell used the experience and contact base gained to get the head coaches position for Reinhardt University’s girl’s basketball team. In 1990 Vic Mitchell took the Head Coaches position at Shorter University.

Vic Mitchell made the class aware of the importance of volunteering. Mitchell said, “everybody loves volunteers” and stated that it can open the door for full-time coaching jobs.

Questions for Speaker:

What is the everyday life of a Graduate Assistant?

What is a Graduate Assistants work load?

Why did Shorter University move into NCAA Division II?

Sport Leadership Information Learned from this speaker:

From the guest speaker, I learnt that I must start looking for a GA position now, it is very important to have a plan and be prepared. In addition to this was Mitchell’s memorable point which highlighted the need for experience in coaching. You can know all the tactics and plays needed to be a great coach but when in charge of a team and being a leader, you must understand how to work with people of different personalities.

Sport Leadership Information Learned from this speaker:

The importance of Leadership and Co-operation. I learnt that Leadership is key iwhen running a team and that deadlines must be set, in order to be met. Without co-operation in a team and trust, these deadlines will not be met on time. However with co-operation they can be met, for example all the coaches at Reinhardt offer help and advice to each other.
